Why the New York Knicks failed in the Derrick Rose trade; Former MVP to clash with Carmelo Anthony

Derrick Rose is joining the New York Knicks after he was traded in a multi-player deal by the Chicago Bulls with their Eastern Conference rivals. Can the former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) return to his prime and help the Knicks be one of the top contenders in the conference?

The 2011 NBA MVP, the youngest to win the prestigious award, played for the Bulls from 2008 to 2016 after he was selected the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. However, he has been bitten by the injury bug in recent years and it’s likely that he is never returning to his MVP form.

Why Derrick Rose will never be the same great player again in New York

Rose won the NBA MVP award for the 2010-2011 season but has struggled with injuries in recent years. After averaging a career-high of 25.0 points per game plus 4.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game that season, Rose numbers has dipped and he has also missed games due to various injuries.

He played just 39 games in 2011-2012 regular season and 10 games in the 2012-2013 regular season with injuries to his hamstring, knee and ankles. Ever since high school, Rose has dealt with injuries too so being injury-prone is not new for the former NBA MVP.

With his new team in New York, Rose is hoping to get back to form that made him one of the top point guards in the league. He played in 66 games last season but it was clear that he did not have the explosiveness that he had during his early years in the league.

Why Derrick Rose is a bad fit with the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony

The Knicks risked with Rose and gave up their starting center Robin Lopez in the deal with the Bulls. This raises the question on how the Knicks will address their front court issue with Kristaps Porzingis as the lone big man with value in the Knicks line-up.

Another question is Rose’s fit with current Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. How will Rose fit with Melo and his isolation offense? Will Rose struggle playing off the ball as Anthony needs the ball in his hands to be effective?

There are speculations this early that Derrick Rose will be a bad fit in New York, particularly with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. However, Rose’s deal is just for another year and his contract will expire after the new NBA season. It’s a low-risk, high-reward deal for New York as they battle to be one of the playoff contenders in the Eastern Conference next year.
