NFL Power Rankings – 8/26
With the third week of the preseason coming to an end, the NFL season is right around the corner. Time for some power rankings!
1) San Francisco 49ers
This rests on Colin Kaepernick’s ability to avoid a sophomore-slump, but the 49ers are the most well-rounded team in the NFL. Anquan Boldin’s impact will be felt immediately.
2) Seattle Seahawks
Another team whose success rides on their quarterback – Russell Wilson – avoiding a sophomore slump, but the Seahawks’ running game and defense are of the premiere of the NFL. We may very well be headed to an NFC West showdown when the NFC Championship rolls around.
3) Denver Broncos
Peyton Manning and the Broncos’ offense will put up staggering numbers with the best receiving corps in the NFL. They will miss Von Miller in those first six games and the defense may be more of a concern than is being let on, but Manning will likely be enough to lead Denver to the one-seed in the AFC.
4) Atlanta Falcons
Steven Jackson will run with even more fury now that he’s finally landed on a winning team and we all know about what Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Roddy White bring to the table.
5) Houston Texans
The Texans will have their success in the regular season with their stout defense and running game leading the way. It will be interesting to see if they can find decent production from DeAndre Hopkins opposite Andre Johnson.
6) Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are being wildly underrated. They have a Super Bowl MVP at quarterback and their defense – lead by a potentially dominate front seven – is miles better than last season. They have a problematic situation at the receiving position, but the previous mentioned assets are still being underrated. Oh, and Ray Rice is still kicking strong as well.
7) Green Bay Packers
The defense is suspect and the offensive line is it’s usual shaky self. The Packers though, have the best quarterback in the league, which counts for at least 11 wins on it’s own.
8) Chicago Bears
Another team who’s being underrated, the Bears have improved their offensive line and in return, improved quarterback Jay Cutler. The Bears will battle Green Bay until the end for the NFC North.
9) Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals are solid at almost every position. Quarterback Andy Dalton will have to raise his game though to dethrone the Ravens, take the AFC North and make some noise in the Playoffs. A.J.
10) New England Patriots
People give the Patriots too much credit just because they are the Patriots. Tom Brady may be the best ever but if Danny Amendola goes down, he may have to learn to catch the football by himself.
11) Washington Redskins
RG3 will work his magic…if he can stay healthy.
12) Dallas Cowboys
The talent is there as usual and it will come down to Tony Romo making or not-making plays.
13) New York Ginats
The Giants will have their typical 9-7 or 10-6 year where they show flashes of a Super Bowl contender and flashes of a discombobulated mess.
14) Pittsburgh Steelers
Big Ben can’t stay healthy, the offensive line can’t stay healthy and Troy Polamalu can’t stay healthy and now their running backs can’t stay healthy. SO MUCH UNHEALTHINESS. The Steelers will be tough and competitive as always but they won’t return to form like many folks think.
15) Kansas City Chiefs
Don’t sleep on the Chiefs. With an actual quarterback at the helm in Alex Smith, the Chiefs will finally be able to put their actually talented roster to use.
16) Indianapolis Colts
The Colts enjoyed incredible luck last season that won’t be there again. Luck is stud but this team is a year or two away from becoming a legitimate playoff noise-maker.
17) Detroit Lions
The big question: Will we see the Lions of two years ago or the Lions of last season? My guess is it’ll be somewhere in the middle.
18) Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings will ride Adrian Peterson to a bunch of wins and Greg Jennings will help the Christian Ponder and the passing game, but Ponder will have to play at a higher level if the Vikings want to grab a wild card spot in a crowded NFC.
19) New Orleans Saints
Offensive guru Sean Peyton is back as head coach after a year suspension, so Drew Brees and the offense will see an improvement, but the defense is poor – so very poor.
20) Saint Louis Rams
Sam Bradford finally has a decent offensive line and decent weapons to throw the football too. Running back is a big question mark but the Rams could be a nice surprise this season.
21) Arizona Cardinals
This is everyones pick to surprise some people. The Cardinals finally have a somewhat competent quarterback with Carson Palmer and no one is happier than Larry Fitzgerald (BIG fantasy year alert). Palmer won’t have the year everyone thinks he will, but he is four or so wins better than the previous mess of quarterbacks the Cardinals trotted out on the field.
22) San Diego Chargers
The Chargers may take off now that Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith have left town, but Phillip Rivers has yet to figure out how to be Phillip Rivers again and now he has no one to throw the ball to after all of the injuries to their receivers.
23) Philadelphia Eagles
Chip Kelly will have the Eagles offense moving at crazy speeds, but in the end it won’t make much difference when Mike Vick get’s hurt and the defense underperforms again.
24) Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins could be another one of those “surprise” teams. Ryan Tannehill is a solid quarterback and receiver Mike Wallace is a huge improvement over the receivers the Dolphins played with last year. The defense is always better than people give it credit for and hey, NEW LOGO!
25) Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton will do Cam Newton things and the Panthers will finish around 7-9 and 8-8.
26) Tennessee Titans
Jake Locker isn’t the way to make the playoffs and the Titans just don’t have enough playmakers on both sides of the ball. It looks like it’s going to be a repeat of last year.
27) Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers have some talent, but Josh Freeman looks like he’s reached his ceiling.
28) Cleveland Browns
The Browns won’t be as bad as people think, but they aren’t very good either. Brandon Weeden and receiver Josh Gordon will have some nice moments – just not enough of those moments.
29) Buffalo Bills
E.J Manuel has show signs of a promising career, but this team is average or below average in too many spots.
30) Jacksonville Jaguars
Blaine Gabbert is still the quarterback.
31) Oakland Raiders
When Terrelle Pryor might be your quarterback, you aren’t going to win very many games.
32) New York Jets
Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith and Rex Ryan.
