The Cleveland Browns waived quarterback Johnny Manziel and will now lure Colin Kaepernick to sign with them as the Browns and the San Francisco 49ers are looking into the possible trade by next week.
The Browns’ cut ties with Manziel mainly due to his off the field activities which troubles the team since it transition into the hands of head coach Hue Jackson. With the team seeing Manziel as an “obstacle” they finally reached a decision to let go of their first round pick in the NFL Draft two years ago.
For Manziel, there’s no bad blood between him and the Browns. TMZ Sports reported that he even thanked the whole organization for the opportunity that was given to him by the team and the support from the fans as well.
“I’d like to thank the Browns for the opportunity they gave me — nearly two years ago, we all hoped that we were building what could be a championship team for Cleveland. I will always remember the support I received from the organization, my teammates and especially the fans,” Manziel said.
Before his release from the Browns, Manziel led the team in a 24-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers that ended their seven game losing streak. He then sat it out during their last game for the 2015 season due to a concussion, but the team confirmed that he missed out on a check-in on that day. Reports had it that Manziel was in Las Vegas partying, which was a red light for the team’s coaching staff and officials.
ESPN reported that no official word has been sent out regarding the talks between the Browns and the 49ers. But by the looks of it the Browns might send Manziel for Kaepernick along with some draft picks that the 49ers could not refuse.
On the other hand, the Denver Broncos and New York Jets are still hoping that they could entice Kaepernick to reconsider them in the talks. The Broncos got Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles after Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans. However, the Broncos might also use Sanchez as their chip in order to land some experienced quarterbacks to fill their void.
The New York Jets might go the other way as they are looking at the possible talks with Robert Griffin III. Griffin is set to visit the Jets and if things go well, they might land the 26-year old free agent.
During the offseason, Manziel’s marketing agency, LRMR, announced that it would no longer work with him. Even his agent, Erik Burkhardt, also announced that he would no longer represent Manziel.
Manziel had his run with the law as well when the Dallas Police Department announced on Feb. 5 that they are opening a criminal investigation with a claim of domestic violence involving his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.
Dallas police had originally closed the case, but re-opened it with allegations stemming from an altercation on January 30 at a downtown Dallas hotel. According to Crowley, Manziel forced her into a car, pulled her by the hair, and threatened to kill both her and himself.
