The Oakland Raiders have extended the contract of their head coach, Jack Del Rio with a new four-year deal. Team owner Mark Davis confirmed the fresh contract for Del Rio, who led the Raiders to a great season last year.
Financial terms of the new Del Rio deal were not disclosed officially. If it was not extended, Del Rio’s contract would expire after the 2018 season. The new deal means Del Rio will try to lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl title until the 2020 season.
Raiders trust Jack Del Rio
“The Raiders have torn up Jack Del Rio’s original contract and rewarded him with a new four-year deal. We are excited to continue building on the strong foundation that has been established and this is a significant step in achieving that goal,” Raiders owner Mark Davis stated in an official press release from the team’s website.
“We are excited to continue building on the strong foundation that has been established and this is a significant step in achieving that goal,” the 53-year-old Del Rio added. The man from Castro Valley, California has been with the Raiders for the last two seasons, leading the team to a 19-13 record.
They struggled in his first year in Oakland with a 7-9 record but improved to 12-4 last season, his second with the team. The Raiders lost in the AFC wild card game against the Houston Texans but that was because they also lost starting quarterback Derek Carr late in the regular season.
Del Rio and the Raiders knew that playoff team was not the same team that got 12 wins in the regular season. The Raiders’ win total was the highest since 2000.
Good year for Oakland but injury doomed team in playoffs
“We had a good year. Went from seven wins to 12 wins…a lot to be proud of. We had an abrupt ending that leaves a taste in your mouth, where, as I told them, I’m not happy about it. We should expect more, and I’m going to demand more,” Del Rio stated after their season was over.
Jack Del Rio was a former NFL player. He played at the linebacker position for the New Orleans Saints (1985 to 1986), Kansas City Chiefs (1987 to 1988), Dallas Cowboys (1989 to 1991) and Minnesota Vikings (1992 to 1995).
Before joining Oakland, Jack Del Rio was the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011. He also handled the Denver Broncos as a defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014.
