Josh Norman might get his paycheck hike after all as two teams have been rumored to in a tug-of-war as two who would make the nicest offer that he could not refuse.
Norman became a free agent after the Carolina Panthers rescinded the franchise tag on him as general manager Dave Gettleman stated that they could give what Norman was asking from them, which was rumored to be in the range of $16 million per season. He added the cornerback was asking for too much in which the team could not simply give in.
“After a number of conversations with Josh’s agent, we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable. We have decided to rescind the franchise tag, freeing Josh to immediately become an unrestricted free agent. We thank Josh for his contributions and truly wish him well,” Gettleman said.
Now with that said, immediately teams such as the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins are most likely to land the talented 28-year old cornerback, who also had the interest of other teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders.
Ian Rapoport has already stated that since Norman being in the talented free agent lists and with the teams wanting his service, his would be one of the shortest free agency in the NFL considering his talent and skills in the field. In his 2015 season with the Panthers, Norman was credited with 181 tackles, 36 pass deflections, seven interceptions, four forced fumbles and two touchdowns.
Among the interested teams, the 49ers emerges as the most likely squad where Norman will set foot next season and according to Charles Robinson the 49ers together with the Jaguars have a $50 million cap space for this season and that would give them the edge in signing Norman, despite the rumored Friday visit of Norman with the Redskins which does not have too much space cap around their belt.
If the 49ers land Norman, it would surely strengthen their defense as shown by Norman in the past season, but everything is still in a limbo as teams might still have something up their sleeves especially with the coming NFL Draft next week in Chicago. Things will surely be interesting until then.
