Calais Campbell has signed a four-year deal worth $60 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars in one of the early signings in the 2017 NFL Free Agency. The deal reportedly has $30 million guaranteed money and reported on Thursday.

“Chose [the Jacksonville Jaguars because Tom Coughlin is a winner, they brought in two other big free agents and they also have been drafting well the last few years. They are a young and hungry defense that I want to lead,” veteran defensive tackle Campbell said.

Calais Campbell adds veteran leadership to Jaguars’ defense

Campbell was the 50th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played for the Phoenix team from 2008 to 2017. He made the NFL Pro Bowl squad twice, in 2014 and 2015. Campbell also made the NFL Second Team All-Pro in 2014 and 2016.

Adam Schefter was one of the first reporters to confirm the Calais Campbell to Jacksonville Jaguars move. According to a report, the Denver Broncos also tried to acquire the defensive tackle. However, the veteran said that he chose the Jaguars because of the presence of Tom Coughlin. Campbell was born in Denver, Colorado.

Calais Campbell likes Tom Coughlin

Tom Coughlin, who was a successful head coach with the New York Giants in previous years, returned to the NFL to join the Jaguars. He was hired as the team’s executive vice president of football operations and handles the roster decisions. Coughlin led the NY Giants to two Super Bowl titles as a head coach winning in SB XLII and SB XLVI.

“Again, the money being higher was probably they ultimate deciding factor here, nobody is disputing that. However, it is pretty cool to hear a free agent of Campbell’s magnitude mention other reasons besides money as to why he is signing with Jacksonville, especially when one of the reasons is Executive Vice-President of Football Operations Tom Coughlin,” Matt R Hoffman wrote for SB Nation about the Calais Campbell NFL free agency signing.

“Coughlin was brought in to overhaul the Jaguars, and establish a brand new culture that is steeped in winning. So far, so good.”

In nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Calais Campbell has recorded 56.5 sacks and 501 tackles. He had a good year last season with Arizona registering 8 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles, 1 interception and 53 tackles. He even returned that interception for a touchdown.

In a related mover, Jacksonville waived defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks.
