Houston Texans Coach Bill O’Brien already knows majority already picked the New England Patriots to beat them. But O’Brien says if they just play “fundamental football” they have a chance in beating Tom Brady and the Patriots.
During Monday’s press conference as reported by Texans TV Host Drew Dougherty, O’Brien noted that playing against the Patriots is tough. He added they need to limit their mistake and improve on defense to get back at the Patriots. Getting a win against the Patriots will be tough for the Texans since the host team practically leads the series.
“We have to play good, sound, fundamental football,” O’Brien said. “They’re the type of team that if you make too many mistakes, they’re going to bury you. So we have to do a good job – not perfect. We have to limit our mistakes regardless of defense, offense or special teams.”
Texans up for the challenge
O’Brien explained they need to take a look at things that helped them win over the Oakland Raiders. He stressed players need to improve drastically as they have less than five days to prepare for the Patriots. Like other teams, Texans’ defense must come up with ways of pressuring Brady.
“He’s a great quarterback. So in preparation for him, it’s very difficult. You have to make sure that, number one, that you do your job,” O’Brien explained. “That your players understand what their role in the game is and how they’re supposed to do every single play.”
O’Brien and the Texans will have three days of practice starting Tuesday to make adjustments in preparations for the Patriots. Odds and betting lines have been harsh to the Texans but O’Brien responded saying betting does not dictate their fate. The defense will still dictate who gets to win this Saturday and O’Brien might want to explore that much.
Defense is still the key
If Houston’s defense stands their ground, they could simply pressure Brady to commit mistakes and be to their advantage. Ranked eighth in defense, the Texans could be a concern for the Patriots. Texans defensive line includes Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus and Benardrick McKinney who could simply sack Brady off the field.
However, the Texans must pray that Brady could not read their defense or else all is lost quickly. Many pick the Patriots to win if Brady turns his Super Bowl powers on. But if the Texans’ defense can do how they handled the Raiders, then they may have a shot at winning.
