The San Francisco 49ers could start Christian Ponder in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. After a bad 1-4 start to the season, there are NFL rumors that veteran quarterback Colin Kaepernick could get the start but new reports state that 49ers players want to give Ponder to start at QB.
Blaine Gabbert now looks overpaid after his bad start to the season and the 49ers are reportedly considering changing the man under center for the rest of the season.
Kaepernick, who’s involved in off the field controversies concerning his national anthem protest, could still get the starting job but it’s not clear if he will win it over Ponder.
“Ponder is the best option for quarterback on the roster,” A source from the 49ers locker room stated via CSN Bay Area.
According to the report, Ponder has outplayed Kaepernick in the 49ers practices. So it’s possible that he also wins the starting QB job in San Francisco.
The 49ers are one of the worst teams in the league. They won their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, 28-0 but have suffered four straight losses to the Carolina Panthers (46-27), Seattle Seahawks (37-18), Dallas Cowboys (24-17) and Arizona Cardinals (33-21).
They can change the starting QB but it’s obvious that San Francisco’s weakness is team defense since they gave up a lot of points the last four games.
Ponder is a veteran already but could be a better option since Kaepernick is involved in many off the field issues including a possible restructuring of his contract and trade rumors.
