Star quarterback Cam Newton will miss the Week 5 match-up between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. The Panthers starting QB suffered concussions in their previous game and also got hit in the head many times in the first four games of the season.
Joe Person from the Charlotte Observer confirmed that Newton did not practice with the team, along with other players like Michael Oher, Jonathan Stewart and Charles Johnson.
There are varying reports to Newton’s status against the Bucs with Fox Sports stating that the Panthers have not ruled out the quarterback yet for Week 5. But Newton missed practice all week after he was hit to the head in their previous match-up against the Atlanta Falcons.
The Panthers, which made the Super Bowl game last season, has played bad to start the year. Carolina is 1-3 so far with losses to the Denver Broncos (21-20), Minnesota Vikings (22-10) and Falcons (48-33). Their only win came against the San Francisco 49ers (46-27), another team that is struggling this season.
Defense has been the problem for the Panthers after they gave up 48 points in their last game. But losing Newton is big since opposing teams’ defenses focuses on stopping the star quarterback.
The quarterback is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol and was recently fined nearly $9,115 for taunting Falcons linebacker Deion Jones in Week 4. Worse for Newton is that Jones avoided a fine for his helmet-to-helmet hit on the quarterback during the game.
