Quarterback Blaine Gabbert will start under center for the San Francisco 49ers in the upcoming NFL season winning the QB battle over veteran Colin Kaepernick, multiple reports confirmed on Tuesday. Could this mean that the 49ers will once again explore the NFL rumors of a trade involving Kaepernick like in the early part of the offseason?
NFL Media’s Michael Silver confirmed that Gabbert is ahead of Kaepernick for starting QB consideration at this point of the offseason in a recent report.
“[Blaine Gabbert’s] loved in this locker room. He did a lot of good things last year and I’d be shocked if he’s not the starter in the opener.”
Earlier in the offseason, the 49ers admitted that they are exploring trades for Kaepernick but eventually retained him as they could not finalize a deal with the Denver Broncos, as per NFL rumors in recent months.
Stats comparison between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert last season:
Colin Kaepernick (9 games) – 1,615 passing yards on 144 of 244 completions (59.0%) with 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions
Blaine Gabbert (8 games) – 2,031 passing yards on 187 of 282 completions (63.1%) with 10 touchdowns and 7 interceptions
Who deserves to start for the San Francisco 49ers? Blaine Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick?
The new development at the 49ers camp of Gabbert possibly winning over Kaepernick for the starting QB position will again stir up the NFL rumors that the latter is available for trade this offseason or even during the 2016 NFL season.
