NFL Rumors: Jay Cutler to the Browns? Cleveland may sign QB if Bears release him

The Jay Cutler era in Chicago is coming to an end as the Bears are rumored to be releasing the veteran quarterback in the offseason. The latest NFL rumors suggest that the Cleveland Browns might be interested in signing Cutler next summer.

The 33-year-old QB had one of the best seasons of his career last year but this season is a different story. He has been inconsistent and his leadership skills are in question plus add the fact that he lost his starting job to Brian Hoyer while he recovers from a thumb injury.

According to Jimmie Kaylor of The Cheat Sheet, all signs point out to the Bears releasing Jay Cutler despite having a contract until 2020. But if Chicago let the veteran QB go in the offseason, his salary will only have a $ million hit on their cap space.

If the Bears indeed release Cutler, there will be teams that are going to show interest. Kaylor pointed out that one of those teams are the Browns that have been looking for a solution at quarterback since 1990s.

“It is clear that Cleveland needs help at the quarterback position. On top of that, the team’s new head coach, Hue Jackson, is a proven quarterback guru, and happens to be exactly the type of coach who has the credibility and ability to tap into Cutler’s immense potential,” Kaylor noted.

However, it should be noted that the Browns are on pace to finish with the worst record in the NFL and end up with the first overall pick next year. If that happens, Cleveland will surely draft a quarterback, possibly DeShone Kizer of the University of Notre Dame.

On the other hand, Jason Cole of Bleacher Report noted that Jay Cutler is very open to moving on from the Chicago Bears if he does not get his starting job back. He has no problem finishing his career somewhere else.

Nevertheless, these are just NFL rumors at the moment and should be taken with a grain of salt. But with all the signs pointing to Cutler being released, expect it to the happen in the offseason.
