Novak Djokovic beats Stanislas Wawrinka in Australian Open
Novak Djokovic was back in the Australian Open and the court he was on gave him flashbacks to 2012.
“I just had flashback of 2012…it was maybe 45 minutes less this match than the one 12 months ago, but still it was still as exciting. I tried to enjoy the moment and couldn’t ask for more. What a match point … unbelievable,” Djokovic said after his win over Stanislas Wawrinka according to ESPN.
The court he beat Wawrinka on is the same one he beat Rafael Nadal in last years’ finals, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Djokovic said that Wawrinka was an equal winner in the match. ”I give him a lot of credit. He has all my respect. He was the aggressive player on the court. I was just hanging in there trying to fight.” he said about the match.
Wawrinka seems to have positive feelings over the loss, ”It’s by far my best match I ever play, especially in five sets against the No. 1 player … full house. At the end I was really, really close. For sure I’m really sad. … But I think there is more positive than negative.”
Djokovic has won the past two Australian Titles. This was his 18th win in a row and is now sending him to the quarterfinals. Next he will play No. 5 Tomas Berdych.
