Orlando Magic hire Rob Hennigan as new general manager
Only a couple of weeks ago, the Orlando Magic was bounced out of the playoffs, lost Dwight “Superman” Howard to a season ending injury, fired both their head coach Stan Van Gundy and former General Manager Otis Smith. It has been a very stressful and busy off season so far, as things will start to escalate again whether Howard is staying or “taking his talents” somewhere else.
Before the drama between the organization and Howard officially start up again, the Magic have just hired Rob Hennigan to replace Smith as their new GM.
Hennigan has spent the past four seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, including the past two seasons as their assistant general manager and play personnel.
Hennigan has also previously worked for the San Antonio Spurs, as he started out as an intern, but quickly worked his way up to being the director of basketball operations for them.
Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins has said that he is very excited to have someone like Hennigan on his staff.
“Rob is an astute strategist and evaluator of talent who comes to the Magic family from two championship-level organizations,” Martins said. “We feel he is an outstanding fit and the right choice to lead our basketball operations team in achieving our championship goals.”
Martins has hired Hennigan to not only help the messy situation between the Magic and Howard, but also picked him because of his success in the NBA drafts. Hennigan was there with the Thunder where they drafted superstars in Russel Westbrook, Kevin Durant and James Harden, as well as key role players in Serge Ibaka.
Hennigan joins Sam Presti as two of the youngest General Managers in the league today.
Although Henngian has enjoyed success with the young Thunder team who are playing their first ever NBA Finals, he will most certainly have his hands full dealing with the Magic.
Outside of the altercation of dealing with Howard, Hennigan will also need to find a new head coach and work with limited cap room because of some bad contracts.
Also in the future, Hennigan will have to make some difficult decisions on certain players such as Jameer Nelson can become an unrestricted free agent, J.J. Reddick who still has one year left and Ryan Anderson as he is set to be a free agent after this month.
Even though the Magic’s organization may have to start rebuilding their roster again, Hennigan was hired for this exact reason. He has been known to find good players to draft, and also the ability to make savvy trades.
Whatever the task is, Hennigan is in for the long-run as he is the new GM. Hopefully it will have a happy ending as Disney World is just around the corner.
