America’s Got Talent Season 11 Grace VanderWaal reveals story behind ‘I don’t know my name’ audition song

America’s Got Talent Season 11 contestant Grace VanderWaal stunned the judges and the audience with her new song “Beautiful Thing” during the live show on Tuesday.

The judges felt the same way, especially Howard Mandel, who pushed the golden buzzer during her audition. Co-judge Simon Cowell also told about her unique voice and her style that made the young girl distinctive from the rest of the contenders.

International Business Times noted her unique ability to write songs for herself paved the way for her unexpected stardom. She said earlier that she’s been writing songs through creating rhythms in her head. In fact, her iconic “I don’t know my name” audition song was created out of the blue.

Due to her exceptional performance and inimitable way of entertaining people, a lot of producers from different record labels were now rushing to have her. Teen Vogue highlighted the thought of tagging her as the next Taylor Swift which Simon Cowell also cited during her audition.

What’s more surprising was she didn’t sign herself in America’s Got Talent Season 11. It was her mom’s initiative to her audition. Initially, her plan was to join American Idol, but the competition doesn’t allow contestants below 15.

So, her mom took the initiative to have her on AGT to try performing on stage with thousands of people watching her. “It’s always been a dream to audition for American Idol. But you have to be 15 or older. And as you may know, this [was] the last season,” she said.

She added that her mom was initially against with her plan of buying ukulele thinking her daughter won’t use it. Instead of dumping her dream, she rebelled and used her birthday money to buy her own instrument. Consequently, she discovered her real talent without realizing the life she’ll have.
