Janet Jackson has made headlines when photographs of her sporting a big baby bump made the rounds on the Internet. The 50-year old “Dammn Baby” singer looked healthy and in tip top shape after canceling her tour and confined to have a bed rest because of her sensitive condition.
Being pregnant at 50 is a happy news for Jackson and her family, but it is also a cause of worry. Getting pregnant at such age, according to a fertility expert Dr. Catherine Deugarte, poses a lot of risks.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dr. Deugarte laid down what Jackson should and should not do to ensure that she will have a smooth and safe pregnancy. She also said that the singer should not let herself undergo stress as it is risky.
“Carrying a baby [at this age] is not a problem as long as you have normal health and your uterus looks great. Once you are pregnant, especially if it’s just one baby, and you’re in good health, the chance of delivering a healthy baby is just as good as somebody who’s younger,” she said.
On the other hand, she also stressed that women who get pregnant at this age are also at risk of caesarean sections. Aside from that, there is also a higher risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, or delivering before the baby is due. Thus, it is also important to be under a doctor’s care on a regular basis, she said.
The doctor emphasized that the singer should take it easy and refrain from strenuous activities that might stress her. These activities are meant no exercise or intercourse because pelvic rest is very important.
In April, Jackson shocked everyone when she announced that she was canceling her Unbreakable World Tour to start a family. The announcement came via a YouTube video.
