League of Legends eSports scholarship, qualification, and other options

With the unstoppable popularity of League of Legends (LoL), game developer and publisher Riot Games in partnership with the University of California, Irvine recently announced its intention of launching the first public university eSports scholarship program. Individual qualification and other eSports scholarship options were likewise introduced.

Before parents start to be more concerned or paranoid about their children’s education, it would be wise to understand that such collaboration is intended for both academic and extra-curricular ‘eSports’ activities.

“UCI eSports will be built on four pillars: competition, academics, entertainment and community. We hope to attract the best gamers from around the world, and our academic programs in computer gaming science, digital arts, computer science, engineering, anthropology, law, medicine, neuroscience and behavior create a strong foundation for research and inquiry related to gaming,” ,” said Thomas Parham, vice chancellor for student affairs via FoxSports.

Such intention will somehow give pro-gamers without financial capacity to proceed to college and pursue both education and their gaming passion. Aside from the known perks, qualified gamers will likewise be honing their League of Legends skills through the help of coaches.

“The university will introduce 10 scholarships for top level League of Legends players next year, aiming to cover about half tuition for in-state students, or about $5,500. The school plans to hire a part-time coach to support their team,” Samuel Lingle of DailyDot reported.

However, if you think you are not qualified to be on the top list and achieve a scholarship for LoL, there are other choices to choose from. Since the launching of League of Legends scholarship in 2014, other eSports scholarships are being offered, namely “Dota 2, Hearthstone, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Heroes of the Storm.”
