Anticipation is high for the return of Outlander as the third season of the Starz time-travelling drama promises to be the biggest of the series. Fans can expect tear-jerking moments and action-packed scenes as well as the highly anticipated Battle of Colluden.

The first scene of season three will feature the famous battle, but it will be different from what book readers are expecting, according to the International Business Times. It will also be much more gruesome than what author Diana Gabaldon’s book, Voyager, described.

Showrunner Ronald D. Moore spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his reason for the change. “It just felt like for the TV show, we’ve been promising this for a while and it just felt like we should have something. We should give the audience some sense of what happened on that moor.”

Season three of Outlander will premiere with Jaime (Sam Heughan) fighting Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) on the battlefield. Considering that the two characters share a very dark history together, it is going to be a very intense battle. New photos from the premiere certainly make it look violent.

Gabaldon’s book, Voyager starts with Jamie having no recollection of what happened at the battle. However, this is not the first time that a change was made in the series as Gabaldon herself gave her blessing to these changes.

Despite these changes, there are still plenty of materials that will likely stay faithful to the book series. With the recent addition of David Berry as Lord John Grey, John Bell as Ian Murray and Joe Abernathy as Wil Johnson, fans are excited to see how these actors will portray their respective characters to life.

Additionally, a report by Entertainment Weekly confirms the return of Fergus, albeit, an older one. The pickpocketing French kid who was adopted by Jaime and Claire in season two will be an adult character come season three. He will be played by Cesar Domboy, who has been working in film, TV, and theater in France for years. Besides his appearance in Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, he also appeared in season 2 of The Borgias.

Outlander season 3 is expected to return on April 2017 on Starz Network.
