The CW finally reveals a new, dark trailer on their latest teen drama/thriller Riverdale, based on the beloved Archie Comics. And it looks like it might fill the slot that Gossip Girl once occupied.
The new promo for the CW midseason series reveals the first look at the network’s take on the Archie Comics. Set in the present day, the teen drama will follow Archie (KJ Apa) and other popular characters from the comics. They will be in their sophomore year of high school and the story will involve a murder-mystery.
Riverdale‘s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said that the new CW series will be a little darker. He said that it will be a little bit weird and complex than fans remembered in the Archie Comics. “We’re saying it’s a little bit like Archie meets Twin Peaks,” Aguirre-Sacasa said to EW at San Diego Comic Con.
The official synopsis of Riverdale goes:
“The live-action series offers a bold, compelling take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends. exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge. And will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books. Including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.”
The promo teases a rather buff Archie, having the time of his life, being a popular high school student. It also features shots of Veronica (Camila Mendes), the new girl in Riverdale competes with Betty (Lili Reinhart) for Archie’s affections. The series will kick off with the tragic death of Jason Blossom, according to Entertainment Weekly.
