Patriots allows fans to exchange Aaron Hernandez jerseys
The New England Patriots are giving their fans an opportunity to exchange their number 81 Aaron Hernandez jerseys.
According to the Boston Herald, fans can trade in their jerseys purchased from the Patriots Pro Shop or online at PatriotsProShop.com for a new Patriots jersey of comparable value, the team said.
“We know that children love wearing their Patriots jerseys, but may not understand why parents don’t want them wearing their Hernandez jerseys anymore,” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said in a statement. “We hope this opportunity to exchange those jerseys at the Patriots ProShop for another player’s jersey will be well-received by parents.”
The mass exchange will commence July 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 7.
In addition to the financial hit from the jersey exchange, the Pats may take a hit for releasing Hernandez. The release may impede New England’s ability to recover the $12.5 million owed to Hernandez, according to Yahoo! Sports. But the release and the jersey exchange are the right moves and the Pats will gladly accept the financial hit to wash their hands of Hernandez.
Hernandez was arrested and charged for murder and gun-related charges and is now a suspect in a 2012 double murder in Boston.
