Puerto Rico eliminates United States from WBC, advances to semi-finals
Team USA has been eliminated from the World Baseball Classic after falling to Puerto Rico 4-3. The Puerto Ricans held off a late-inning rally to finish the win.
Despite only giving up four hits in the game, Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs. His second earned run came in the sixth when he allowed Carlos Beltran to get on base with one out. Joe Torre pulled Vogelsong with two outs, and it was Vinny Pestano’s pitching that allowed Beltran to get to third base and eventually get walked in after the bases were loaded.
The very next at bat, Pestano gave up a double to Andy Gonzalez that scored two more runs for Puerto Rico.
American bats stayed quiet for the first portion of the game until the seventh inning. Joe Mauer tripled off reliever Giovanni Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton scored Mauer with a single in the next at bat.
USA came back to bat in the eighth and continued to score. Ryan Braun doubled in Jimmy Rollins, and another run was added when new pitcher Fernando Cabrera walked in another with the bases loaded.
But reliever J. C. Romero, the 36-year-old former major-leaguer who is still unsigned, came in to mitigate the damage and got the final out in the eighth. He retired the side in the ninth to earn the save and advance Puerto Rico into the next round.
