Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring in a solid central defender at the heart of his defense. Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane has been heavily tipped to make his switch to Old Trafford by the end of the transfer window. However, the obstacle to the transfer is Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.
Varane is considered as the best defensive talent in French football at the moment. He has a special connection with the French supporters. Being from France, Zidane knows the talent Varane possess and given Pepe’s age, he will likely want to keep the player at the Santiago Bernabeu for the foreseeable future, according to Tribalfootball.com.
Jonathan Beilin, a former top scout with Nice has recently revealed the difficulty Manchester United will have in attracting the top players in the transfer market this season.
“Do not forget Manchester United will not play the Champion’s League next year… For the top players it is more than important. I do not think they have a chance.” Beilin said.
Varane suffered a bad knee injury a couple of years ago which has halted his progress in Madrid. However, Zidane sees the player as the possible starting centre back of the club after Pepe retires.
Mourinho signed Varane to Madrid during his time as the Los Blancos manager. Hence, he knows the quality the player has and wants to add him to his Manchester United squad. However, as things are at the current moment, the deal looks unlikely.
It has to be noted that United has already signed in a central defender in the form of Eric Bailly from Villareal this summer.
