NBA News: Toronto Raptors sign Dwane Casey to $18M extension through 2019

Dwane Casey will continue as the Raptors head coach until 2019. The Toronto Raptors and Casey have agreed upon a $18 million, 3-year extension, as confirmed by Doug Smith of the Toronto Star.

The Raptors tore up their option for the 16-17 season with their head coach and preferred a new three-year contract extension.

Casey led the Raptors to the Eastern Conference Finals this season but bowed out to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs won the East Final series, 4-2. The Raptors notched 56 regular season wins in this edition of NBA. Casey finished fifth in the voting for the NBA Coach of The Year in 2016.

Casey had been the Raptors coach for the past five seasons. Under him, the team’s total win record increased every season. He led Toronto to three straight playoff appearances.

Casey’s coaching program guided Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan to develop into All-Stars.

The Raptors also want to retain the entire coaching team, who guided the team to record the franchise’s best season in history. This includes Andy Greer (Minnesota and New York) and Rex Kalamian (Washington), who draw interest of other teams, according to the league sources.

Donnovan Bennett of Sportsnet has given the Raptors coach A-plus grade for this season.

“Not only has the team improved every year during his time in Toronto, Casey brought the team within two wins of the Finals, showing some of his best in-series adjustments in his coaching career. Further solidifying an already improved defense is the number one task for the defensive-minded Casey as the Raptors were 0-9 in the post-season when surrendering 100 points.” Bennet pointed out.
