Real Madrid knocks out Manchester United behind goal from Ronaldo
Real Madrid pulled off the 2-1 victory Tuesday night against Manchester United at Old Trafford and took the aggregate score 3-2 to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.
The story of the match was the game and leg winning goal by former Manchester star Cristiano Ronaldo and a red card given to United’s Nani early in the second half.
Nani charged after a high bouncing ball and tried to control it with an outstretched foot with his studs high. Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa came running toward to ball too and took Nani’s cleat to his left midsection.
Turkish referee Cuynet Cakir sent off Nani with a straight red card in the 55th minute of the match.
“We didn’t play well. We didn’t deserve to win,” said Real coach Jose Mourinho, reports the Associated Press.
Things were looking like Manchester United would advance with a 1-0 lead they took on an own goal in the 48th minute by Sergio Ramos.
Real’s Luka Modric tied the game in 67th minute and about three minutes later Ronaldo put in his goal.
According to the New York Times, Manchester’s striker Ryan Giggs made his 1,000 senior team appearance in the game.
