Rudy Gay traded to Toronto Raptors
The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a three team trade to give Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors.
Yahoo Sports reports that Memphis will receive Jose Calderon whose $10.5 million contract will be routed to the Detroit Pistons for Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye. The Raptors sent Ed Davis and second round pick to the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies also sent Hamed Haddadi to the Raptors.
While there are multiple players involved in this trade, Rudy Gay is the big name and he is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds.
The Grizzlies have been trying to unload contracts and Gay’s contract was over $37 million for the next two seasons.
Prince has been in the league for 11 years and the entire time was with Detroit. This season he is averaging 11.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. The Pistons save $15 million on the final two years of Prince’s contract.
USA Today brings up a point to look out for about this trade. The Grizzlies made a trade earlier this month to the Cleveland Cavaliers. They traded their first round draft pick, Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, and Josh Selby for Jon Leuer. That trade helped them get under the luxury tax which will help them next season.
Right now the Grizzlies are fourth in the Western Conference with a record of 29-15. Gay will certainly help the Raptors but people will be wondering what will become of the Grizzlies now that they have begun to break up a team that has come together so well.
