Boxing rumors and news have never stopped focusing on Floyd Mayweather Jr. despite his retirement from the ring. Once more it is being rumored that Mayweather will come back to fight an undefeated knockout artist, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. And such speculation is coming from the trainer of Golovkin, Abel Sanchez.
It was previously rumored that Mayweather Jr. could actually return to action and fight Manny Pacquiao one more time. However, there was no response or confirmation coming from the camp of “Pretty Boy” regarding his rumored comeback.
On the other hand, another name is being implicated to the comeback of Mayweather through a huge return fight against Golovkin as his trainer pointed out. On a podcast interview from “On the Ropes” Sanchez stated that:
“He just seems to be fixated on Golovkin I’ve seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he’s talking about beating Golovkin. It looks like he’s laying the groundwork for something, whether it’s Golovkin or somebody else. Floyd is laying the groundwork for a comeback.”
Such statement of Golovkin’s trainer is quite feasible especially that these past months the undefeated Mayweather Jr. has been mentioning middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s name. Boxing News24 reporter Chris Williams shared similar observation with Sanchez as he mentioned that:
“Mayweather has always been the type of fighter who wants to get the biggest name possible for his fights, and there’s none bigger than Golovkin right now. Mayweather wouldn’t be able to shake up the boxing world if he were to return to the sport to fight the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook or Manny Pacquiao… The only man that can do that is Golovkin.”
However, there is still no confirmation about a possible bout between Mayweather and Golovkin. Floyd has been known to talk much of other boxers, and sometimes such attention towards other fighters are not manifested through a boxing match. But still it is too early to conclude on the possible outcome, who knows what Mayweather might decide in the coming months.
