San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis could be retiring from the NFL before their season begins Sunday. According to various NFL rumors, Davis might quit just days before the 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams.
The 26-year-old OL is reported to be considering retirement again, according to Cam Inman of San Jose Mercury News. Davis is listed as questionable due to an injury, which is the reason why he missed a recent 49ers’ practice.
Davis was already struggling with injuries for the 2015 season, with concussion injuries as his main reason for not suiting up for the team. There are NFL rumors that he is motivated to return this offseason and wants a starting job for San Francisco.
The 6-foot-5 323-pounder from Piscataway, New Jersey played for the 49ers from 2010 to 2014 but missed the 2015 season. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Davis announced before the 2015 season that he wants to “let his brain and body heal” first but promised an NFL comeback. In July earlier this year, he was reinstated by the league and joined the 49ers’ training camp.
If Davis retires, Andrew Tiller or Brandon Thomas will take over the right guard spot for the 49ers.
The 49ers are not one of the title contenders this season. After their game against the Rams, they have a toughs schedule taking on the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks in their next two games.
Other sites like Bleacher Report and Pro Football Talk have sources claiming that the retirement rumors of Anthony Davis are not true.
