UFC Rumors: BJ Penn, Ricardo Lamas to headline UFC Fight Night 97 bout in Manila?

UFC Fight Night 97 in Manila might be headlined by BJ Penn and Ricardo Lamas. This UFC event is scheduled to happen on October 15, 2016, at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines. This UFC fight night rumors could only be answered by the UFC organizers themselves and nothing has been confirmed so far.

According to MMAFighting.com, the UFC is thinking of putting Penn against Lamas in a featherweight match. The UFC is also targeting this fight as the main event of the UFC Fight Night in Manila.

BJ Penn’s last fight was against Frankie Edgar in which he lost via TKO in the third round. This is a featherweight non-title bout that occurred two years ago at the Ultimate Fighter 19 finale.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Lamas fought Max Holloway this June of this year at the UFC 199. But Lamas lost against Holloway in a close unanimous decision result.

Both Penn and Lamas are veterans of the UFC already with both fighters having a total of 33 fights already. BJ had the most fights among the two by having 22 matches, while Lamas only had 10 fights in his UFC career.

Penn is a former UFC Lightweight Champion. He won this against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 back in 2008.

BJ Penn is also a former UFC welterweight champion in which he achieved this against Matt Hughes at the UFC 46. But the belt that he won was eventually stripped by the UFC since he signed a contract to fight in K-1 afterward.

On the other hand, Lamas is not as successful as compared to Penn as he has still unable to win a belt in the UFC. Lamas only got one opportunity to fight for the featherweight title against Jose Aldo but he lost via unanimous decision.

Whether this UFC fight night rumors comes to fruition, this fight would really be crucial in the two fighters’ careers since they lost their last fights. They are also reaching the end of their careers as Penn is 37 years old right now, while Ricardo is 34 years old.
