Savannah State is 70.5 point underdog against Florida State

After being crushed 84-0 by No. 18 Oklahoma State last weekend, Savannah State is a record 70 ½-point underdog heading into their matchup against No. 6 Florida State this Saturday.

According to Sports Illustrated, this is the largest point spread for a Division I game ever.

“This is the biggest line I’ve put up in 10 years doing this,” Mike Colbert, vice president of risk management for Cantor Gaming in Las Vegas, said.

Last week, Savannah State was 65 ½-point underdogs against Oklahoma State and couldn’t cover the spread. Cantor Gaming made an even bigger spread because they believe Florida State is even better than Oklahoma State.

The games were scheduled by Savannah State strictly for the money. Savannah State spokesman Opio Mashariki said they received $385,000 for last week’s game against Oklahoma State, and will be paid $475,000 for their matchup with Florida State, reports Bloomberg. The money will help build their athletic program.

The Savannah State Tigers have gone 4-72 against teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA. Now, they will play a top-10 team in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
