Shawne Merriman hospitalized Sunday night

Former star and recently retired linebacker Shawne Merriman was hospitalized Sunday night in what authorities called a “medical emergency.”

The LA Times reported Merriman was rushed to the hospital after overdosing on an unspecified combination of alcohol and drugs that left Merriman “lights out.”

According to TMZ, Merriman was just dehydrated and apparently OK after being seen out and about just a dew hours after being hospitalized.

Merriman, only 29, announced his retirement from the National Football League in March. In eight seasons with the San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills, Merriman recorded 45.5 sacks. He was named to the Pro Bowl three times, and won the 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

But injuries derailed his career. According to Yahoo! Sports, Merriman missed 47 of 80 games over the last five years of his career.

“I retire today not because I don’t feel I can go out there and still play the game at a very high level, I am retiring because I want to retire on my own terms and leave while I know I can still physically play the game,” he said at the time of his retirement. “I am stepping back to pursue other great opportunities that have been afforded me.”
