Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has his sights set on Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez as his top transfer target this summer. Mahrez has been sensational for the league leader’s this season and has fired the foxes from relegation candidates to championship contenders.
Wenger must have nightmares when he sleeps at night considering that he had the chance to sign the Algerian back in January 2014 but let it slip. Mahrez went on to sign for Leicester for a meager $576,024 from the French Ligue 2 club Le Havre, as reported by The Sun.
The Frenchman who has 12 months left on his contract stated the reason for not signing Mahrez being criticism. Wenger mentioned that the fans of big clubs prefer spending $57 million on a superstar player rather than an unknown player.
Mahrez will be a hot property in the upcoming transfer window with all the big clubs of the world looking to sign the player. One of the heavyweights is La Liga side Barcelona who are keen to splash the cash on the 25-year-old winger. However, Wenger is desperate to land the Algerian player at Arsenal in hopes of winning the Premier League next season.
Arsenal drew with Crystal Palace last Sunday and the team was heavily criticized by fans and media alike for their dismal performance. Wenger has admitted that the club is out of the title race this season and changes have to be made at the Emirates for the club to challenge for the title next season.
Theo Walcott along with a host of other players is expected to leave the Emirates at the end of this season owing to their poor performances.
