Cristiano Ronaldo may not beat Lionel Messi for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, but the Real Madrid forward certainly has things going for him on social media.
Cristiano Ronaldo has a massive presence on social media accounts like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and has now become the 1st athlete to reach the 200 million mark.
“Really proud to be the 1st athlete with 200 million social media followers. A big thank you to all my fans!” Ronaldo said on his Twitter account.
The official figure of Cristiano Ronaldo’s social media following stands at 200,264,405 as of time of publishing. The figure is miles ahead than that of Messi whose readings stand out at 122,423,164, according to Hookit.com.
Although it has to be noted that Lionel Messi does not have a Twitter account. Hence, Ronaldo’s dominance clearly has a reason behind it.
It’s not only Messi whom the Portugese superstar has left behind. Players like Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez are also miles behind the Real Madrid forward. Rooney has a social media presence of around 43.436,991 while Suarez’s stats read 33,232,359.

Ronaldo gains around 150,000+ social media followers a day as compared to Messi’s 80,000. NBA superstar LeBron James has around 69 million followers but is still significantly behind the former Manchester United winger.
Although Cristiano Ronaldo has boasted his social media presence, there are fans who have hit him back with criticism. Some believe that many of his social media followers are fake, while others say that if Messi had a Twitter account and was not busy proving himself as the world’s greatest footballer, he would have over 400 million.
Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are amazing footballers; there is no doubt about that. Both of them have achieved immense glory and are still continuing to do so. However, if one does look at the amount of Ballon d’Or a player has won, Lionel Messi with five is clearly ahead of CR7’s three.
Both have a different style of game. While Cristiano Ronaldo believes in a more theatrical approach, Messi has a sense of subtlety to him.
Since Ronaldo’s move to Madrid, Messi has scored 361 goals in 353 appearances while Ronaldo has 347 goals to his name in 332 appearances, according to messivsronaldo.net.
In terms of success with their respective clubs, Messi have won more trophies with Barcelona than Ronaldo has won with Real Madrid.
It seems the fight amongst both the superstars on and off the field will continue for time immemorial.
