Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has signaled his intention of spending big in order to overhaul the current squad. This will be done if the current playing members of the squad are unable to bring positive results over the course of the current season.
Despite contributing in one of the worst title defenses in the history of the English Premier League (EPL), Abramovich backed his players heading into the current season and only sacked previous manager Jose Mourinho. The Russian businessman appointed former Juventus and Italy manager Antonio Conte to change back the team’s fortunes, as reported by The Telegraph.
Chelsea signed a total of four players in the recently concluded summer transfer window to reshape the squad. Players like N’Golo Kante, David Luiz, Michy Batshuayi and Marcos Alonso was brought into the club. However, neither of the inclusions was able to uplift the playing standards and the club is replicating the woes similar to last season.

Two consecutive humiliations at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal proved that Conte has a huge challenge in his hands for the remainder of the season. The team needs to improve a lot in order to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United for the top four positions in the league table.
The main problematic area for The Blues this season has been their central defenders. Both Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill has shown vulnerability and David Luiz is yet to do justice on the amount the club spent on him to bring him back from Paris Saint-Germain. Club veteran John Terry, who is 35-years-old is missing games due to an injury and this has hurt the team poorly.
It’s not only the defenders who has failed to perform, midfielders like Oscar, Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas has failed to show their form which won them the title a couple of seasons back. Striker Diego Costa has lacked a partner upfront as well with new signing Batshuayi seen more as a backup by Conte.
It has been reported that Abramovich is interested to bring in Atletico Madrid superstar Antoine Griezmann at the Stamford Bridge. The 49-year-old will back Conte with the funds required to bring the player at the club next summer. The club hierarchy is also monitoring the likes of Roma’s Antonio Rudiger, as reported by The Mirror.
However, any major revamp of the squad will have to wait until the transfer window next summer. Many under performing players at the club will be disposed with new faces coming in to push Chelsea back among the elites of the country.
