Former Tottenham Hotspurs left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto has always been known to speak his heart out when it comes to the media. Such has been the instance when the former Premier League defender has revealed his choice of buying boots from eBay rather than having it free from sponsors.
The Cameroonian international revealed that he considers having a sponsor to prostitution and that being free was more important to his self-esteem. Sponsorship arrangements are very common in the modern-era of sports, but Assou-Ekotto chooses to live life differently.
The 31-year-old Assou-Ekotto currently plays for Ligue 1 side Saint Etienne after spending the entire 2014-15 season without a club. The former Tottenham defender spent also spent some time playing for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) on loan when he was under contract with the London based side.
“I’d rather be fee than to prostitute myself for a sponsor. In all honesty, when you’re an African player, it’s not that interesting to have a sponsor.” Assou-Ekotto said, according to Gazetta World.
The defender from Cameroon also stated that if one desires, good shoes could be found on eBay worth $33. He also prefers to be vintage rather than spending money on expensive fashionable boots.
“You can find them on eBay, and they’re not expensive. Being fashionable is expensive, but you’re more distinguished to be vintage” he added.
This is not the first time when the former Lens defender has made headlines for making controversial statements. Previously Assou-Ekotto mentioned that he considers football as merely a job and would prefer to play for any club that offers him more money.
Despite having a decent run with Tottenham Hotspurs, he was loaned out to QPR for the 2013-14 season. He was released from Spurs in the following season.
