Manchester United are currently in the hunt for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, but the transfer news which has gone under the radar is Monaco right-back Fabinho’s link to Old Trafford. United manager, Jose Mourinho sees the Brazilian as a perfect fit, considering Matteo Darmian failed to impress in the position last season.
Manchester United released the squad numbers this week for the upcoming season. When the entire world is busy figuring out who the number six is going to, many has missed that the n umber two is left vacant as well. This might be a clear indication that the United hierarchy are seriously considering a move to bring in Fabinho, according to Manchester Evening News.
It has to be noted that Rafael was the last United player to wear the number two shirt. Ever since the Brazilian left for Lyon, no other player has worn the number at Old Trafford. It was initially thought that Darmian would be given the number, but the Italian has retained his number 36 jersey of last season.
Although Mourinho has the likes of Tomothy Fosu-Mensah and Antonio Valencia as options at right-back, neither is natural to that position and a move for Fabinho seems practical. The 22-year-old has been influential in Monaco’s play in the French League and he wears the number two jersey.
The man from Campinas, Brazil made a total of 34 appearances in the French Ligue 1 last season. He won 89 tackles with a success rate of 47%. He made 76 interceptions, 98 clearances and eight blocks for his club. The Brazilian also has an eye for goal as he netted in 6 goals, according to Squawka.
Fabinho is tall, strong and built for the English Premier League. He could be a surprising late addition for Mourinho this summer in his Manchester United squad.
