Manchester United will turn their attention to signing Juventus center-back Leonardo Bonucci after finalizing the deal with Paul Pogba. Jose Mourinho reportedly wants to add one experience defender beside Chris Smalling, despite signing Eric Bailly this summer.
The Red Devils have brought on the topic of Bonucci while having their Pogba negotiations with Juventus. However, it is believed that they will face stiff competition from English Premier League (EPL) rivals, Manchester City and Chelsea, according to ESPN.
Both City and Chelsea are supposedly in advanced talks to sign the defender and the Red Devils will have to step up their game if they want to gain an advantage in the race to sign the player. Juventus want $66 million for Bonucci and won’t deter unless the full amount is paid.
Bonucci is one of the crucial figures at the Old Lady and if Pogba leaves for Manchester United, then the Bianconeri won’t let another of their star players leave the club. The Italian forms a very strong partnership with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli at the heart of the defense and has been key to all the domestic success Juventus has enjoyed recently.
However, the club from Turin also has a promising youngster in the form of Daniele Rugani in their squad. They have also roped in Medhi Benatia from Bayern Munich on a season-long loan and if they get a good offer for Bonucci, they might consider letting the player leave.
It has to be noted though that if United signs Pogba, they would not get aggressive in this deal as their chase for marquee players would end for the summer. A serious pursuit for Bonucci doesn’t look likely at the moment.
