English Premier League (EPL) club Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho made a very personal approach to sign Real Madrid center-back Raphael Varane before the end of the summer transfer window. However, the Frenchman has decided that he will remain at the Sanitiago Bernabeu for at least another season.
It is being reported that Real Madrid allowed Varane to talk with United over a potential summer transfer. But, the France international had a word with Los Blancos manager, Zindedine Zidane and is convicned that he has a future at the Spanish capital, at least for one more season. He has hence decided to reject Mourinho’s personal offer to join United, as reported by Cadena Cope radio station, via independent.ie.
This will force Mourinho to look at other center-back options in the transfer market as he looks to bolster his defense. Southampton defender Jose Fonte is another name who is rumored to make his way to Old Trafford before the end of the summer transfer window, next Wednesday.
Former Manchester United defender and legend, Rio Ferdinand has come out to suggest that Mourinho needs to add other defensive options to his team in order to fight for the Premier League title.
“A great defense is built around strong working relationships between the four guys and the trouble for United has been that their best players have not all been available at the same time in the last year,” Ferdinand said.
It is also being reported that Phil Jones will remain at the club, especially after United’s failed attempt to bring in Varane to the Theater of Dreams. The 24-year-old was being considered by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, as they too look for a center-back in the transfer market.
However, Mourinho’s past relationship with Wenger is poor and the Portuguese will reject any approach made by the Gunners over Jones. The player has been told that he has a future at United and will get to prove himself over the course of the season.
Mourinho’s Manchester United team looks settled at the moment and it is unlikely that Old Trafford will see any new arrivals between now and the end of the transfer window on Wednesday.
