Napoli and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain will stay at Naples and will help the team fight for the Italian Serie A next season, believes president Aurelio De Laurentiis. The 28-year-old is a target of Chelsea as the London based club wants to find an alternative option to Diego Costa.
“He has not received offers and, as he is a serious man, he will wait until the end of the Copa America before telling us what he wants to do. I do not think he will betray the affection Naples has shown him.” Laurentiis, as reported by Marca, via La Repubblica.
The Argentinal international has been lethal in front of goal for Napoli in the 2015-16 Serie A season. He has scored a total of 36 goals in the league this season along with two assists. The former Real Madrid striker had a shot accuracy of 59%, as reported by Squawka.com.
Laurentiis also confirmed that he has placed a new offer on the table for Higuain. It will be interesting to see what the Argentine wants to do now. Chelsea will definitely offer him more money that Napoli, but the club from London won’t be able to offer him Champions League football next season. Napoli on the other hand will be featuring in Europe’s elite club competition and it will take some immense persuasion from the Chelsea hierarchy to capture Higuain.
Higuain has a release clause of $106 million, which Chelsea has to pay in full in order to capture the man born in Brest, France. Chelsea’s new incoming coach Antonio Conte wants to strengthen his fire power upfront, but this kind of money may seem too much for a 28-year-old striker who may have a couple of more years left in him at the top.
Higuain is currently enjoying international football with Argentina, who takes on Bolivia in the third-round Group D encounter of Copa America 2016 on Tuesday.
