Dutch striker Robin Van Persie is looking to leave his Turkish club Fenerbahce and has offered himself to Barcelona as their backup striker. The 32-year-old will accept the role of fourth striker behind the big-three, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.
Van Persie wants to leave Turkey owing to its political conditions and he sees Barcelona as his perfect destination club. Despite the Blaugrana possessing the best three forwards in world football at the moment, the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker is willing to play backup at Camp Nou, as reported by Sport.
Despite his age, the man from Rotterdam, Netherlands is still an effective striker in the box and has retained his goalscoring abilities in Turkey. Van Persie has scored 16 goals in 30 appearances for Fenerbahce last season in the Turkish Super League. He created 17 chances for the club, in which three were assists, according to Squawka.
Munir El Haddadi is currently the backup striker for Barcelona in case one of Messi, Neymar or Suarez gets injured. However, the Catalan giant could use an experienced backup in the form of Van Persie to rotate with the first-team attackers.
The main concerning factor for Barcelona in the deal is Van Persie’s age. The striker will turn 33 this August and is likely to lose more pace with time. He is a player in decline and his transition to quick tempo play of Barca could be questioned.
The Dutchman also commands a yearly salary of $5.4 million, which could prove to be a stumbling block, if Barcelona is indeed interested in signing him.
