Top 10 highest-paid football players: Lionel Messi heads list

The 2015-16 campaign for most European football leagues is almost over. France Football has released its annual list of the highest-paid football players in the world. Lionel Messi leads this year’s list along with four other La Liga players.

Here are the top 10 highest-paid football players for the 2015-16 season. It’s not only based on the player’s salary from his club but also from bonuses, endorsement deals and other business ventures.

1. Lionel Messi – Barcelona, €74 million

The current best player in the world has the highest annual salary in world football. Barcelona pays him €36 million per year to go along with a €3 million bonus for winning the quintuple in the 2014-15 campaign.

He also earned a staggering €35 million from sponsorship deals and other ventures. He has endorsement deals with Adidas, EA Sports, Gatorade, Pepsi, Samsung, and Gillette among others.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid, €67.4 million

The Madrid star earns €32 million from his contract while his bonus only netted him €400,000 because Madrid failed to win any trophies last year. He earned more from his sponsorship deals and business including for Nike and his own line of CR7 underwear and footwear for a total of €35 million.

3. Neymar – Barcelona, €43.5 million

The 24-year-old Brazilian certainly earns a lot for someone of his age. His Barcelona contract pays him €20 million per year to go along a €2.5 million bonus. Just like Ronaldo, he has a contract with Nike and has his own line of merchandise called NJR sportswear for about €21 million.

The remaining seven players were composed of three PSG players, two more from La Liga and surprisingly just one from the English Premier League and Bundesliga.

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Paris Saint-Germain, €28.5 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €22.5 million
  • Other Income: €6 million (Nike, Volvo, Vitamin Well, own perfume brand)

5. Thiago Silva – Paris Saint-Germain, €26.5 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €24 million
  • Other Income: €2.5 million (Nike, Nissan, Skullcandy)

6. Angel Di Maria – Paris Saint-Germain, €26 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €24 .8 million
  • Other Income: €1.2 million (Adidas)

7. Gareth Bale – Real Madrid, €24.5 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €14.5 million
  • Other Income: €10 million (Adidas, Foot Locker, Konami, Sony)

8. Thomas Müller – Bayern Munich, €23.6 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €16.6 million
  • Other Income: €7 million (Volkswagen, Gillette, Young Wings)

9. Wayne Rooney – Manchester United, €22 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €17 million
  • Other Income: €5 million (Nike, Samsung)

10. Andrés Iniesta – Barcelona, €21.5 million

  • Salary+Bonus: €17 million
  • Other Income: €4.5 million (Nike, Nissan, Sony)
