Spanish club signs 7-year-old
European powerhouse club team Real Madrid signs 7-year-old Argentine Leonel Angel Coira.
The 7-year-old sensation was pursued by both Real Madrid and its rival, Atletico Madrid. Miguel Coira, Leonel’s father, chose Real Madrid, stating to Spanish newspaper ABC, “He (Leonel) felt more comfortable with (Real) Madrid. Leonel will try to blossom into a superstar like his idol, Lionel Messi, of rival Barcelona. He has signed a one year contract with the club’s youngest squad, the “Benjamin.”
It may take a while before we see Leonel match the greatness of Messi, but he has some of the same characteristics as his hero, such as the same long, floppy hair, nationality and skill. Real Madrid will hope to strike gold with the development of Coira.
To most Americans, the signing of a 7-year-old would seem taboo, but it is nothing new in soccer. Dutch club VVV have already signed an 18-month-old, because of his ability to kick a soccer ball. Top club teams are putting more emphasis on signing young talent as early as possible, instead of paying huge transfer fees. Most professional club teams have a youth academy and every single one of them hope to have the next great thing.
