Two-time ASEAN Basketball League titlist Hi-Tech Bangkok City is the heavy favorite to go all the way this season and with good reason.
With an intact lineup behind twin towers Steven Thomas and Christien Charles, the hunger hasn’t waned for Thailand’s top team as they attempt to taste the sweet taste of victory one more time.
Team owner Nipondh Chawalitmontien is bent on bringing his team back to the top that he left no stone unturned and brought back most of the players who helped make Hi-Tech the ABL’s first and only two-time titleholders.
They are looking to write history anew by being the league’s first and only back-to-back champions.
Although they will no longer have Filipino spitfires Jerick Canada, last season’s finals MVP, Patrick Cabahug due to rule changes, Hi-Tech Bangkok City will lean more on Wutipong Dasom and fellow veterans Kannawat Lertlaokul and Sukhdave Ghogar.
Charles, the reigning two-time ABL Best Import, will be the team’s anchor on both ends of the floor as they try to defend the championship they won against the Westports Malaysia Dragons in 2014.
Charles posted averages of 21.4 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks per game during the elimination round.
Then there’s Thomas, an intimidating presence from the inside who will provide the needed muscle in Hi-Tech’s frontline.
Hi-Tech Bangkok City starts its title-retention bid on October 27 versus the Singapore Slingers at their home turf in Thailand.
