Barcelona Transfer News: Liverpool close in on Catalan shot-stopper

Barcelona may lose their German wonder kid goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window. The Merseyside club are struggling with their Belgian custodian Simon Mignolet and will look to add the German to strengthen their backline.

Liverpool had previously made a bid for ter Stegen in the region of $15 million. However, the price was deemed too low for the Catalan giants to issue the transfer. But, if Liverpool approaches Barcelona with a raised bid in the next transfer window, chances are that ter Stegen will likely to be headed towards Anfield, according to The Mirror.

It’s not only Liverpool who are looking to sign the German prodigy, Manchester City have also been touted to make a big push to land the former Borussia Monchengladbach shot-stopper.

City does not have a proper back-up for their England international Joe Hart and they see ter Stegen filling up the role perfectly. With Pep Guardiola in the mix for next season, this deal is very likely to happen.

Mignolet has not been the leader he was marked up to be. A mistake from the Belgian allowed City’s Fernandinho to beat him in the final of the Capital One Cup. Manchester City went on to win the trophy, thus leaving Liverpool hapless.

There are very few young keepers in today’s game who has bundle of potential like ter Stegen. Barcelona signed him from Germany with hope of replacing their former No. 1 Victor Valdes. However, with Claudio Bravo having some sensational performances, ter Stegen had to share his goalkeeping duties with the Chilean professional.

Having a bright future ahead of him, ter Stegen would love to leave Barcelona for a club which can offer him more first team opportunities. Liverpool certainly fits the bill ahead of Manchester City in that regard.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp will add a goalkeeper to his squad next season and ter Stegen looks to be heading his list of desired No. 1s.
