Champions League: Barcelona Wins Without Messi, Luis Suarez Leads Barca

After a disappointing start in their Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, Luis Suarez pulled off an emphatic 2-1 victory for Barcelona in the 82nd minute of the Match. Suarez sealed Barca’s fate just in time, as the team struggled right from the start following Messi’s absence on their side.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos led the Bundesliga side from the front, with his first half header, challenging the shaky Catalonian side at Camp Nou. According to Sky Sports report, things turned from bad to worse for the Spanish side after they lost Andres Iniesta following a suspected hamstring injury, first hour into the match.

Just when things were looking to go teasy, Suarez capitalised on a brilliant skill from Munir El Haddadi to take his side on the wining front. Munir filled in the gap for Messi which brought some hope in front of a packed house. He had substituted Messi in their winning match against Las Palmas, last weekend in the 10th minute after the Argentine had to leave the field due to his threatening injury.

FC Barcelona had put out a statement following reports of their medical staff, confirming Messi’s injury. Messi is likely to miss around two months of football due to a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his left knee. Barca had earlier suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat against Calta Vigo last week, but got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Las Palmas. Fans were hopeful that their favourite star would make a comeback before El Classico on Nov. 22.

The Washington Post reported, that the the team didn’t look like themselves in their first 80 minutes and “spent majority of their time missing the passes and giving the ball away”. The Star studded Spanish side with the likes of Neymar and Suarez, surely seemed out of touch. 23 year old Sergi Roberto scored an equaliser off a deflection while Suarez found the nets just three minutes after.

Pique who admitted that it would be a challenge to move forward without Messi, said during their press conference, “We will do what we have to do without Messi. A player like him is impossible to replace but we showed during the preseason we know how to play without him.”

Barca Topped their Group E after their win on Tuesday and is set to meet FC BATE Borisov on Oct. 20.
