MMA News: Henderson to fight for welterweight title in Bellator debut

Benson Henderson will make his Bellator debut on April 22 at Bellator 153. MMA Fighting reports that Henderson will fight against reigning welterweight titleholder Andrey Koreshkov.

Henderson shocked the entire MMA world when he announced that he would be leaving UFC for Bellator.Henderson became the most high-profile fighter to leave UFC till now.

The 32-year-old has cited the UFC-Reebok deal along with other reasons as the driving forces behind his decision to quit UFC.

UFC did offer Henderson a strong amount to keep him. But looks like Bellator’s offer was too tempting to resist. Henderson also revealed that UFC was third in line behind the offers of Bellator and Singapore’s ONE Championship.

Henderson has made three lightweight title defences against Frankie Edgar, Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez. He also has had wins over Donald CerroneJim MillerJosh Thomson, and Jamie Varner.

Henderson closed his UFC run by winning back-to-back fights at welterweight by defeating Brandon Thatch and Jorge Masvidal.

Henderson also revealed that he intends to compete in both lightweight and welterweight divisions at Bellator.

Henderson’s Bellator opponent, Andrey Koreshkov is a Russian striker who has continuously won his five fights since losing to Ben Askren.

Bellator 153 is scheduled to take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The night’s main card will air live on Spike TV.
