Dave Joerger earns a lucrative deal with Kings two days after being fired by Grizzlies

Dave Joerger will replace George Karl as Sacramento Kings head coach. Joerger was fired by the Memphis Grizzlies last week. It is not only a soft landing spot which was offered to Joerger by the Kings, they have also doubled his salary.

The latest trend shows that the NBA teams are spending extravagantly on coaches who are either inexperienced or fired by the other teams. The reason behind this is that the market rate is rising and the teams have a money influx from the NBA’s television deal. But there is a salary cap limit on the amount they can spend on players, as reports the Wall Street Journal.

And guys like Joerger are reaping the benefits of the current market situation.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dave to the Sacramento Kings,” said Vlade Divac. “He is a strong and passionate leader with a proven track record of producing results. Dave shares our focus on creating a long-term culture of winning and I look forward to a bright future ahead for the Kings with his leadership on the court.”

Kings owner Vivek Ranadive met Joerger on Monday and discussions moved on to a rapid conclusion with an agreement. Joerger also has the autonomy to hire his assistant coaching staff. The Kings sent a private jet to bring the former Memphis coach and his family to Sacramento. Vlade Divac, the Kings’ vice president of basketball operations spent considerable time in working out a new deal.

Joerger had a 147-99 record with the Grizzlies over three years. But what led to his dismissal from the Grizzlies despite having a decent record?

Joerger wasn’t convinced with the talent assembled at Memphis. Nor did he show any intent to honor the remaining two years of his contract. After a spell of internal acrimony, Memphis finally fired him on Saturday.
