Lionel Messi Lifts Ballon d’Or For Fifth Time

Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for a record fifth time by beating the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and his Barcelona team mate Neymar.

Messi spent the last two years sitting in the audience as Ronaldo clinched the trophy with back-to-back wins.

But on Monday night, it was a different story altogether.

Before the awards ceremony, Messi told reporters that “just to be here for a ninth time is truly amazing, and I am already satisfied just to be here,” reports FOX Sports.

But after his win, he could not hide his excitement and thanked his fans and team mates.

“It’s a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage winning again, after being there in the audience watching as Cristiano won for two years,” said Messi according to FOX Sports report.

“It is incredible that it is my fifth award, and it is much more than anything I dreamed of as a kid. I want to thank everyone who voted and my teammates, for without them none of this would ever have been possible. I also want to thank football for everything it has brought me, both bad and good. It has made me grow and learn, always.”

Despite struggling with injuries, Messi scored 43 goals and led his team to the La Liga title and helped his team lift the Champions League trophy by scoring 10 goals throughout their game. Messi also scored the decisive goal in the Copa Del Rey final which helped their win against Atletico Madrid.

However, if there is one defeat for Messi then it is Argentina’s loss to hosts Chile in the Copa American final.

Messi was a runaway winner, collecting 41.3% of the ballots, far ahead of Ronaldo at 27.8% and Neymar at 7.9%.

Hosted by James Nesbitt and Kate Abdo, the glitzy ceremony was held in Zurich, Switzerland.
