Several NBA teams to wear Hardwood Classics uniforms to pay tribute to landmark years in a handful of games in the 2016-17 season.
The ongoing NBA season is about to reach its fever pitch, but designs of the uniforms for the 2016-17 season have started to appear way ahead of schedule and possibly its formal unveiling by their respective teams.
Previously, potential primary logo changes for three teams – Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz, and Detroit Pistons – have popped up, then two uniform designs for the Toronto Raptors surfaced as well within this month alone.
Now, additional uniform designs from league outfitter adidas have leaked and revealed that several teams will wear Hardwood Classics throwback uniforms to hark back to landmark years in their respective team histories during a handful of games in the 2016-17 season.
Leading the pack will be the Cleveland Cavaliers wearing their orange “Basket-V” jerseys used from the 1983-84 to 1986-87 seasons by former All-Stars Brad Daugherty, Ron Harper, and Mark Price. The team last wore these throwbacks in a handful of games during the 2014-15 season.
Then, the Atlanta Hawks will parade its short-lived uniforms from 1970 to 1972. The team wore the green alternates briefly during the mid-2000s, but will wear the blue road version this time around.
The Los Angeles Lakers also joins in the fun with their classic home gold uniforms famously worn during the “Showtime” era of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy. They last took this design out of the closet during its 60th anniversary season in 2007-08, where the team’s members took the throwback look one step further by wearing short shorts during the first half of their game against the Boston Celtics.
Next, the Philadelphia 76ers will pay tribute to the Wilt Chamberlain-era championship teams with the blue away uniforms worn during the late 1960s. Also, the Toronto Raptors will wear the blue away uniforms of the 1946-47 Toronto Huskies as part of the team’s set of six uniforms next season.
Retaining their respective retro looks will be the Indiana Pacers with their “Hickory” uniforms from “Hoosiers” fame, and the New York Knicks with their 1946-47 “Knickerbockers” threads.
