It was a night that Terrence Romeo brought a huge sledgehammer to a fist fight by scoring a career-high of 41 points to help Globalport Batang Pier get past the Alaska Aces with a 107-93 victory to lead 1-0 in the 2015-2016 PBA Philippine Cup Semi-Finals.
On the let go in the 1st, Romeo already made his presence felt by leading the Globalport charge by scoring 13 points in his first 8 minutes and 35 seconds of game play. Combining with Keith Jensen’s 6 points in the opening quarter, Globalport lead 29-18 during the end of the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, the aces were able to bite through the Globalport lead with a 11-4 run to come close at 32-29 but Romeo and Jensen kept the charge running to push the lead to 7 8 points.
Calvin Abueva had his chances to trim the Globalport lead but he failed to make 5 out of his 6 free throws in the 2nd quarter.
As Romeo ended with 9 more points to end the 1st half with 22 points including a tip-in at the buzzer to boost the morale of Globalport by leading by 10 points entering the 2nd half.
As the 2nd half begins, Romeo was not yet done with his scoring and scored 8 more points while Stanley Pringle started to come to life after having a tough first half and helped Globalport increase the lead to 62-44.
Alaska big men – Sonny Thoss, Vic Manuel and even veteran Erik Menk tried to fill in Calvin Abueva’s lack of productivity to combine with 17 points in the 3rd quarter to keep the game within reach at 82-74 to end the 3rd quarter.
It was Globalport’s team captain, Billy Mamaril’s turn to help his team by opening up with 8 points in the final quarter. With Terrence Romeo’s 3-pointer at 43.6 seconds that made the game out of reach for the Alaska Aces at 103-91.
After hitting 4 more free throws from Terrence Romeo to end the game, Globalport won 107-93.
In his PBA Semi-Finals debut, Romeo ended up with a impressive career high at 41 points to go along with 4 assists and 2 steals. He had help from Stanley Pringle with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists while Keith Jensen and Billy Mamaril added 12 points each.
In a losing effort, Alaska was led by Cyrus Baguio with 15 points while therewere two double-double performance from Vic Manuel with 14 poinnts and 11 rebounds and Sonny Thoss with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Game 2 will be played on Wednesday – January 7, 2015 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
