Sixers rookie Jahlil Okafor figured in an altercation outside a bar in Boston Wednesday night.
Celebrity website TMZ released a video Thursday showing a man, later identified as the NBA newbie, punching a man on the face after a verbal tussle. The said incident happened outside Storyville club.
The incident reportedly stemmed after a group of guys outside the club heckled Okafor, who was with his friends.
The hecklers allegedly shouted “the Sixers suck!” to Okafor to which the 19-year-old piped back “We got money you broke ass n**ga!”
A brawl ensues. Witnesses tried to hold Okafor back, but he was able to break free and swung wildly at another man that sent him hard to the ground.
In the course of the fight, Okafor, who helped lead the Duke Blue Devils to an NCAA national championship this past April, tumbles to the ground and a man wearing a green jacket was seen punching the 6-foot-11 player at the back of the head.
Both groups fled the scene and so far no arrests have been made.
The 76ers has released a statement following the incident.
“We are aware of the report and we are currently working to gather additional information,” according to the team. “Until that time, we will have no further comment.”
Prior to the commotion, the Sixers absorbed an 84-80 loss to the Boston Celtics.
Okafor, Philadelphia’s No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Rookie Draft, listed 19 points and nine rebounds in the Sixers’ defeat. So far this season, he has been averaging a team-high 18.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 33.4 minutes per game.
Philadelphia, with a woeful 0-16 win-loss record, has lost 26 straight games dating back to last season and is the first team in league history to start at 0-16 in consecutive years.
It is likely that Okafor will be meted some punishment by his team and the NBA.
