Tennis News: Novak Djokovic upset loss coming early in Rio 2016? Serbian draws with nemesis Juan Del Potro in first round

Current ATP World No. 1, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will have a tough opening match-up in the tennis men’s singles competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics drawing rival Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the first round of the event.

Del Potro defeated Djokovic for the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Andy Murray (Great Britain) was the gold medalist that year after beating rival Roger Federer in the championship round.

While Del Potro found success against Djokovic in the last Summer Games, their head to head match-up in the ATP tour is dominated by the Serbian. Djokovic is 11-3 all-time against Del Potro and has won three straight matches against the Argentinean.

Del Potro has also fallen off in the ATP rankings, currently just No. 145 in the world. The 27-year-old Argentinean was in the Top 10 of the world rankings two years ago but he has struggled with various injuries in recent years.

Murray will face Djokovic’s compatriot, Viktor Troicki in his own first round match up in Rio. Federer will be missing the Olympic Games this year as he’s struggling with injuries and will actually miss the rest of the 2016 ATP season.

Meanwhile, former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal from Spain will face Federico Delbonis from Argentina in the first round. Nadal is reportedly playing with a wrist injury and is not considered a serious contender for any medal in this year’s Olympics because of the injury.
